Advent Sermon Series 2011
November 27-December 25

“Thus says the LORD,” is a stock phrase used by the prophets in the Old Testament. It highlights the main mission of the prophets: to bring a word from God to God’s people. The phrase told the people to “listen up,” because what was being said was coming from the LORD, even though it was through the prophet.

This year, Pastor Olson will be preaching a sermon series on the theme “Thus Says the Lord: Tidings of Comfort and Joy.” The sermons will focus on the words from the prophets, with an ear to the Gospel readings. Here are the sermon titles and key Bible texts.

Advent 1, November 27: “Tempered Expectations,” Isaiah 64:1-9. Though the people know they don’t deserve it, they still expect God to act because of God’s past faithfulness.

Advent 2, December 4: “Prepare for Comforting,” Isaiah 40:1-11. The prophet Isaiah tells the people to get ready for God’s coming, a message that will be repeated by another prophet, John the Baptist.

Advent 3, December 11: “Finally, Good News!” Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11. Just when the darkness seems to be winning, the prophet proclaims that the light is coming.

Advent 4, December 18: “The King is Coming,” 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16. The King promised by Isaiah will find expression in Mary’s song, the “Magnificat.”

Christmas Eve, December 24: “Great Joy,” Isaiah 9:2-7. The birth of Jesus is indeed good news of great joy, a promise given by Isaiah and repeated by the heavenly host.

Christmas Day, December 25:
“We Can See!” Isaiah 52:7-10. The light that shines in the darkness helps us see God’s saving work.
